Dear Friends of St. Jude, It seems like I just arrived as Director of the Dominican Shrine of St. Jude, but it has been almost four years now. Our Dominican life calls us to itinerancy, or being free and willing to go where one is needed. In this spirit, I will be leaving as Director of the Shrine to take on the responsibility of Pastor at Holy Rosary-Santo Rosario Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, effective July 1. Perhaps you remember Fr. José Santiago, O.P. who led the March Novena? I am moving to take over for him as he goes on to teach in our seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. I’m both saddened to be leaving the Shrine where I’ve gotten to know many of you so well, and where I’ve learned so much about the depth of people’s faith and devotion. But at the same time I’m excited about the possibility of serving the church in a new capacity, in a parish that has been very well-formed by Fr. José, serving the poorest of the poor here in the US. Fr. Robert Botthof, O.P will be taking over for me as the Pastoral Director of the Shrine. His job will include writing these articles, responding to your letters, and being responsible for our Novenas. He will be leading us in our May Solemn Novena which runs from May 6-14, 2009. You will like him! Fr. Robert is a fine, seasoned and pastoral priest. He has a rich life, having joined the Dominicans after the death of his wife. He is a grandfather! You can read more about him on page 3. I have lived with Fr. Robert for the last several years and highly recommend him to you. Another change at the Shrine is that we will now have a full-time lay Director. We welcome Mary Fawcett to the Shrine family. This person will take care of the administrative aspects which are so necessary for the functioning of the Shrine. You will be well served by both Fr. Botthof and Mary Fawcett. The May Solemn Novena focuses on our Blessed Mother and our own mothers. Transitions, such as this transition of leadership at the Shrine, are a time of special stress and anxiety. My mother was one who helped me through various transitions: beginning to walk, getting used to going to school, caring for me when I was sick, and encouraging me to leave home when it was time. May the Blessed Mother help us as we experience this transition here at the Dominican Shrine of St. Jude! We still rely on your help and prayers, too. Your donation of $25 or whatever you can afford will help us to continue growing and reaching out to the disheartened with the Good News of Jesus Christ and his Apostle St. Jude. Thank you for your prayers, support, but most of all, your great, deep, faith and devotion. If you’re ever in Minneapolis, look me up! In Christ and St. Jude, Fr. Jim Spahn, O.P. |
